Matthew Rowland

Matthew most recently played Mr. Wormwood in the 2023-2024 International Tour of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda the Musical. Before taking on Matilda, Matthew played Gordon Shakespeare in Debbie Isitt's Nativity the Musical at Birmingham Rep.


In 2021-2022, Matthew took on the role of Ned Schneebly in the inaugural UK and Ireland tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock. Earlier in 2021, Matthew rejoined the company of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at The London Palladium, having been part of the production in 2019.


Matthew has previously served as a Swing and cover for the roles of Dr. Pomatter and Ogie in the West End production of Waitress the Musical. Before that, he played Skimbleshanks in the International Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats the Musical. Additionally, Matthew played the role of Doctor in the RSC's West End production of Matilda the Musical at Cambridge Theatre. In April 2016, he concluded a two-year engagement in the West End's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, where he also served as Assistant Children's Director and understudied the role of Mr. Beauregarde.


Matthew's previous roles include Boy George in Taboo (10th anniversary revival, Brixton Club House, Broadway World UK Awards nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical) and Alf in Darling of the Day (Union Theatre). Just before Charlie, Matthew reprised his role as Boy George in the New York 10th anniversary concerts of Taboo at 54 Below. Matthew also choreographed Stephen Sondheim's Putting It Together at St James Theatre and G Live, Guildford. His voice can be heard on the concept recording of The Confession Room (SimG Records) in the role of Frank.


Matthew graduated with a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre from ArtsEd London in 2012. He is a professional mentor for the Council for Dance Education and Training, guiding students in Higher Dance and Drama education as they enter the industry. Additionally, he is a licensed professional Chaperone and First Aid trained.


Matthew has been teaching Musical Theatre for many years and has held Head of Dance positions at various institutions, including Masquerade Theatre Arts and Stagecoach academies. He has also taught at vocational colleges such as Arts Educational Schools London, The Brit School of Performing Arts, Emil Dale Studios, London Studio Centre, and Pineapple Dance Studios. Alongside performing, he works professionally as both a director and choreographer, with choreography credits including Fame! and A Chorus Line at The Bob Hope Theatre for Glenlyn Academy and Gypsy, 3rd Year Musical, at Bird College, Sidcup. Matthew will return to Bird College in 2025 to Direct and Choreograph a 3rd Year Musical.


He is delighted to serve as Principal of Vibe Arts in his home county of Kent and is passionate about delivering unique training to promising young students.
